About the Opportunity

Oshkiigmong EDC has an exciting opportunity for members to join its compensated Board of Directors , based in Curve Lake First Nation, Ontario . Board meetings may be attended virtually or in person, with occasional travel expected for certain board-related activities.

Reporting to the Shareholder, Curve Lake First Nation Council, you will play a pivotal role in providing strategic oversight, guidance, and accountability for the Corporation's governance, planning, and economic development activities.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for upholding the Corporation’s mandate, ensuring culturally aligned business practices, and guiding decision-making that advances long-term prosperity for the Curve Lake community.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the strategic direction and operations of Oshkiigmong EDC in alignment with community values
  • Participating in regular and special board meetings, including committee involvement where applicable
  • Evaluating business plans and opportunities with a focus on community benefit and sustainability
  • Advising and supporting the President of the Corporation, while providing oversight on leadership decisions
  • Upholding high standards of governance, transparency, and fiduciary responsibility
  • Supporting the development of corporate policies, risk management frameworks, and strategic plans
  • Ensuring business development decisions reflect cultural relevance and long-term community goals
  • Maintaining awareness of regional, provincial, and national economic and policy trends relevant to First Nation development

More About You

To qualify, you will bring a combination of experience in business, governance, or community development , along with a deep understanding of First Nation contexts and values . While no single background defines success in this role, candidates with lived, professional, or educational experience that aligns with Oshkiigmong EDC’s goals will be considered.

Experience in any of the following areas will be especially valued:

  • Business administration, finance, or investment
  • Law, corporate governance, or First Nation governance
  • Economic development, taxation, or policy development
  • Human resources, communications, or strategic planning
  • Environmental stewardship or knowledge of Aboriginal and treaty rights

The following skills and experience will be strong assets:

  • Ability to assess business plans and evaluate economic opportunities
  • Experience supporting or overseeing executive leadership
  • Strong grasp of fiduciary duties, relevant legal frameworks, and governance practices in First Nation contexts
  • Familiarity with governance and planning frameworks for economic growth
  • Connection to the Curve Lake First Nation community, culture, and priorities
  • Understanding of the evolving economic landscape impacting Indigenous communities across Turtle Island
  • Familiarity with Federal and Provincial legislation and funding frameworks relevant to First Nation economic development
  • Experience building relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government, community, and industry partners
  • Willingness and ability to travel

About the Benefits

Serving as a Board Director with Oshkiigmong Economic Development Corporation offers a unique blend of meaningful leadership and fair compensation .

Directors will receive honoraria for meeting participation and preparation, including:

  • $800 for full-day meetings
  • $400 for half-day meetings
  • $400/month for meeting preparation (capped at once per month)
  • A fixed honorarium of $2,000/month for the Chair of the Board
  • Reimbursement for travel-related expenses , including mileage, meals, and parking, in accordance with Oshkiigmong EDC policies
  • Eligibility to attend professional development opportunities with pre-approval from the President and Board
