Steamship Mutual is a P&I insurance company, with 230 employees worldwide. The main office is based near Liverpool Street station, London. We have offices in Bermuda, Brazil, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, New York and Japan, and Singapore.

Overall Job Purpose :

We are seeking a visionary, strategic, and commercially astute Chief Executive Officer to lead and expand the operations of our Tokyo office. The CEO will be responsible for representing the Club in Japan, driving member engagement and expansion of the Club’s membership in Japan, collaborating with colleagues abroad and in Japan, overseeing regulatory and industry relationships, and delivering the Club’s services in alignment with our global standards and governance.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

• Provide recommendations and execute the regional business strategy aligned with Steamship Mutual’s objectives.
• Lead initiatives to enhance member, broker and market engagement, retention, and acquisition across Japan.
• Represent the Club’s interests within local and regional industry forums, regulatory bodies, and member organisations.

Operational Oversight

• Oversee all aspects of the Tokyo office operations, including underwriting, claims handling, marketing, staff relations, finance, and compliance.
• Ensure the Tokyo office meets all local regulatory and licensing requirements (e.g., FSA requirements)

Team & Culture

• Lead and develop a high-performing, locally based team with a strong focus on service excellence and professional development.
• Promote a culture that reflects the Club’s values of integrity, trust, responsiveness, and service

Stakeholder Engagement

• Maintain strong relationships with existing Members, brokers, and service providers.
• Network effectively with ship owners and charterers to implement the Club’s strategy for growth in Japan.
• Act as the primary local spokesperson and ambassador for the Club in Japan.
  
  
  
  

Reporting & Governance

• Report regularly to the Club’s Leadership team on operational performance, regulatory matters, and strategic progress.
• Liaise with global leadership to ensure alignment of the Tokyo Office across all aspects of the Club’s business.

Person Specification:

Experience & Qualifications

• Substantial experience in marine insurance, legal and/or commercial shipping / ship management.
• Leadership experience within P&I insurance (either at a Club, broker or in-house at a shipping company) would be an advantage.
• Experience managing regional operations and dealing with international staff / colleagues.

Education

• (Preferred) Bachelor’s or higher degree in Law, Maritime Studies, Insurance, or Business.
