Job Description

A K-12 school in Santa Fe, NM is seeking a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) for a contracted position lasting the entire school year. This role focuses on providing expert mobility training and orientation services to students who are visually impaired or blind, helping them develop independence and safe navigation skills in their educational environment and the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct orientation and mobility assessments for K-12 students with visual impairments.
  • Develop and implement individualized mobility training plans tailored to each students needs.
  • Instruct students in using mobility aids such as white canes and electronic travel devices.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to integrate mobility skills into the school day.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and maintain detailed records of services provided.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS credential preferred).
  • Experience working with school-age children with visual impairments.
  • Strong knowledge of techniques and equipment used in mobility instruction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and educational staff.
  • Familiarity with K-12 educational settings and special education procedures.
