UPMC Altoona is hiring a Full-Time Registered Nurse to support the Altoona Family Physicians practice! This position will work Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am - 5pm.

The RN Staff Nurse is responsible for providing direct and indirect patient care to patients in the department including assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Is able to assist and direct intern/resident physicians in patient care and assists Faculty in teaching the requirements of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the Residency Review Committee (RRC). Is able to perform all standard office nursing procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Medications:
    • Maintain supply of unexpired vaccine, disposal/return of expired Vaccine for Children program vaccine with necessary paperwork.
    • Monitors temperatures of vaccine storage and documents; initiates Vaccine for Children program forms; does monthly tracking records.
    • Maintain written educational material for patients regarding vaccines and provides to patients with verbal reinforcement.
    • Maintain adequate supply;rotation of office medications. Complete monthly inspection form for Pharmacy.
  • Patient Education Program:
    • Assists Faculty members and residents with the assessment and selection of patient education needs. 
    • Coordinates the acquisition of educational materials as needed.
    • Supplies designated patient education areas with a variety of educational materials.
  • Charting:
    • Assesses need, observes, and records patient vital signs to include temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure. Obtains height, weight, and head measurements as indicated. 
    • Obtains health history and/or subjective complaint.
    • Fax or E RXTelephones medication orders to designated pharmacy as directed by physician and makes notation of each. In telephone encounter
    • Is efficient in use of all forms (adult, pediatrics, obstetrical flow sheets, graphs, physical exam, release, surgical, treatment, videotaping, and incident reports). Efficient is use of electronic medical record for charting.
  • Administrative Responsibilities
    • Participates in defining, maintaining, and interpreting standards of nursing practice.
    • Observes and analyzes effects of methods of delivery of nursing care/services and works in collaboration with RN/Clinical Supervisor and appropriate others to implement innovations.
    • Promotes and participates in patient education and counseling based on health needs and illness status and involves the individual and significant others for a better understanding and smooth implementation of plan to attain immediate and long-range goals.
    • Participates in patient care by consultation with others within the Hospital and in community agencies as resources for continuity of patient care.
    • Serves as a preceptor for new staff assigned to her/his unit. 
    • Transcribes and implements physician orders.
  • Educational Responsibilities:
    • Understands regulations and requirements of all HMOs and demonstrates proficiency in teaching these to interns and residents as well assisting each patient.
    • Experienced in telephone triaging and demonstrates proficiency in teaching triaging skills to interns and residents.
    • Knowledge of current standards in pediatric immunization and demonstrates proficiency in teaching these standards to interns and residents.
    • Has experience and is able to demonstrate proficiency in teaching all aspects of nursing care, time management, and daily functions of a physician's office to interns, residents, and students.
    • Assists interns and residents with learning the specific and accurate use of the community-based resources for improving the wellness of patients.
    • Assists interns and residents with appropriate use of educational materials available.
    • Assists interns and residents with proper set up and materials for procedures.
  • Procedures:
    • Assists the physician during office surgery, biopsies, colposcopy, cryosurgery, sigmoidoscopy, wound dressing, splinting, and physical exams including pelvic and breast; procures appropriate consent form.
    • Complies with established occupational exposure policies.
    • Performs urine catheterization, electrocardiography, nebulizer therapy, ear irrigation, audiometry, visual testing, tympanometry, and spirometry to include appropriate calculation, mounting, or charting. 
    • In absence of the Medical Technologist/Instructor may perform:
      • Urine dip stick and specific gravity.
      • Obtain blood specimens via finger stick, HGB, Glucose, and Lead Levels.
      • Rapid Strep and Pregnancy Testing.
      • Obtain and process cultures for transport.
      • Prepare slides for KOH, wet prep, and UA.
  • Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Accepts responsibility and accountability for the quality and the quantity of nursing care rendered under her/his supervision. Assigns and delegates duties to other clinical personnel in accord with their educational preparation and demonstrated proficiency.
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates the nursing regimen for specific patients within the unit.
    • Makes nursing judgments and decisions about the nursing care for the patient by using assessment data to formulate and implement a plan of care.
    • Documents, reports, and interprets patient responses, symptoms, and progress for appropriate nursing staff and other healthcare team members.
    • Assists personnel under her/his supervision to develop the necessary skills needed for continued competence in providing for patient care, comfort, safety, and teaching.
  • Patient Care:
    • Determines the required and appropriate preparation of the patient for the physician examination.
    • Assists the physician as indicated with physical exams.
    • Assists the physician in explaining the nature of the patient's illness and instructs patients requiring special dates, medications, treatments, and/or procedures and schedules same.

  • Must be a graduate from an approved school of nursing.
  • Must hold a current license to practice nursing in the State of Pennsylvania
  • Must satisfactorily complete the Nursing Department's orientation program and probationary period; must hold CPR certification.
  • Must maintain current certification in a nursing specialty.
  • A minimum of one year's experience in a hospital setting and 1-2 years' experience in a Family Medicine physician's office or ambulatory care setting to include laboratory competency and office surgery/procedures preferred.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

     
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
