Department Website: Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount. This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by building the public health infrastructure necessary to respond effectively to non-infectious toxicological outbreaks or natural disasters to prevent harmful exposures and protect the health of Californians. The incumbent serves as a social\behavioral scientist subject matter expert and conducts public health investigations to evaluate the public health implications of chemical exposure from non-infectious toxicological outbreaks. The Research Scientist III (Soc/Beh) (RSIII) works under the general direction of the Investigations Unit Supervisor, in the Exposure Investigations Section, within the Environmental Health Investigations Branch (EHIB) and serves an integral role on a multidisciplinary team to develop the state’s capacity and respond to illness and injury outbreaks that are not associated with infectious diseases, including toxicological outbreaks. The RSIII plans, organizes, and directs investigations of a highly developed scientific scope and complexity; makes independent, complex decisions related to the social and behavioral aspects in responding to toxicological outbreaks and engaging impacted community members. Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: Experience working and responding to active exposure and outbreak related investigations Knowledge of epidemiologic principles specifically related to social factors and behavioral influences towards health outcomes, evaluation, and analysis Experience engaging with the general public and speaking with medical professionals.
