Lethbridge Police Victim/Witness Services Unit (V/WSU)is a police-based victim assistanceprogram built on the belief that all victims and witnesses of crime and tragedy deserve the right to be supported well and find healing. Our emergency-scene and follow-up trauma-informed support can create opportunities to heal foster hope and empowerment while promoting a safer and healthier community. We recognize navigating the criminal justice system can be challenging and we are here to ensure you dont have to walk alone.

V/WSU has been supporting the community since 1991. Our dedicated volunteer Crisis Support Workers are first responders that provide compassionate support information referrals safety planning and education services that are designed with a victim centered approach. V/WSU Crisis Support Workers are trained extensively in communication crisis intervention traumatic stress and the unique victim experience.

Working alongside the Lethbridge Police Service and other community services within southern Alberta we ensure our communitys needs are met 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Our on-scene assistance and referrals may include such incidents as:

  • Abuse and Assault
  • Domestic Violence
  • Suicide/Sudden Death
  • Missing Persons
  • Fraud
  • Major Collisions
  • Robbery
  • Harassment/Stalking
  • Bereavement
  • Homicide

As a Crisis Support Worker Volunteer you will:

  • Have a desire to support victims in the community through trauma and tragedy in service of helping them navigate the criminal justice system
  • Be available to volunteer for a minimum of two (2) 12-hour on-call scheduled shifts per month.
  • Be prepared to respond to calls at any time during a scheduled shift
  • Attend all required introductory training sessions (January 14 21 28 from 6-9pm and January 17 and 24 from 8am-4pm)
  • Attend monthly team knowledge development meetings

The successful candidate will:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be able to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Attend all shifts they have committed to
  • Provide trauma-informed client-centered customer service to members of the community from all walks of life
  • Must possess valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License
  • Be enthusiastic friendly and outgoing with a positive attitude
  • Be a good team player who contributes positively to their team
  • Be physically capable to access buildings/dwellings with limited accessibility (climbing up porches stairs etc.)
  • Have strong communication skills both oral and written as well as great interpersonal and active listening skills
  • Have an awareness and understanding of Indigenous culture and history
  • Have an awareness of diverse demographics and cultures within the City of Lethbridge
  • Be familiar and knowledgeable of the City of Lethbridge

STEPS OF HIRING PROCESS

Qualified candidates are required to complete and submit the following:

  1. Submit online application before 12:00 PM MST on October 15 2025.
  2. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an in-person interview.
  3. Qualified candidates will be required to undergo a Canadian Police information check vulnerable sector checks fingerprinting checks and reference checks.
    1. To complete this stage candidates will be required to complete an online webform (link will be provided at a later date) and submit two (2) valid pieces of government-issued identification one (1) of these pieces of identification must include a photo.
    2. If you were not born in Canada then one of the government issued identifications you upload must be your Canada Permanent Residency Card or proof of Canadian Citizenship.
    3. If you have resided outside of Canada for a period of six (6) months or longer within the past 10 years a valid police certificate from each country an applicant has resided in during that time must be provided by the applicant at the time of application.
  4. After background checks are complete cleared candidates will be invited to participate in a job shadow shift with current V/WSU Crisis Support Workers.
  5. Following the job shadow shifts final selections will be made and offers of position as a Volunteer - Crisis Support Worker will be made.
  6. Required Training will be held at LPS on January 14 21 28 from 6-9pm and January 17 and 24 from 8am-4pm.
  7. Active Crisis Support with V/WSU will begin in February of 2026.

Further LPS facility dogs support the emotional needs of victims and or witnesses through the Criminal Justice Process. A Facility Dog is directed by a professional with specialized expertise. Facility dogs frequent many areas of our addition we have police service dogs. Our police service dogs have minimal interaction with employees on site under the supervision of a trained handler.
